FORT SMITH FIRE DEPARTMENT CEREMONY
 
(February 5, 2019, Fort Smith, AR) — Awards, promotions, oaths. All will be part of a Fort Smith Fire Department (FSFD) ceremony on Friday, February 8, 2019,at  5:30 p.m. at the Fort Smith Convention Center Rotunda, 800 Rogers Avenue. The event will be presided over by Fort Smith Fire Chief Phil Christensen. Mayor George B. McGill, City Administrator Carl E. Geffken, and other city leaders will be in attendance.
 
CANDIDATES’ OATH
Four new Firefighter candidates will be sworn in:
  • Hunter Money
  • Zac Vickers
  • Chase Stepp
  • Leon Marion
 
FIREFIGHTER OF THE YEAR
The Firefighter of the Year Award will be presented to Avery Short. Firefighter Short is a crew member on Pumper 4, C-Shift, and has been with FSFD for three years. He is a member of the dive team, swift water rescue team, Fire TAC team, and earned National Registry Emergency Medical Technician certification.
 
COMPANY OFFICER OF THE YEAR
The Company Officer of the Year Award will be presented to Captain Jesse Chandler. Captain Chandler is a Company Officer on Pumper 1, C-Shift, and has command over two crews and two trucks. During his 14 years with FSFD, he has received several Achievement and Commendation Medals for outstanding performance. Most impressive: Chandler has received the Valor Medal three times.
 
TELECOMMUNICATOR OF THE YEAR
The Fire Telecommunicator of the Year Award will be presented to Donna Reneau. Donna has been with the Fort Smith Police Dispatch division for five years. Her attention to detail while working FIRE channels contributes to the timeliness and success of fire response incidents. 
 
PROMOTIONAL CEREMONY
 
Promotions to the rank of Driver:
  • Derek Waters
    • Firefighter Waters has been with FSFD for six years. His promotion puts him in the operator’s seat of Pumper 1, A-Shift.
  • Kevin Kennedy
    • Firefighter Kennedy has been with FSFD for five years. His promotion puts him in the operator’s seat of Pumper 8, C-Shift.
  • Brian Evans
    • Firefighter Evans has been with FSFD for four years. His promotion puts him in the operator’s seat of Ladder 1, C-Shift.
  • Tyler Davis
    • Firefighter Davis has been with FSFD for five years. His promotion puts him in the operator’s seat of Pumper 4, A-Shift.
 
Promotion to the rank of Captain:
  • Evan Mallard
    • Driver Mallard has been with FSFD for eight years. His attention to detail and leadership abilities have contributed to his successful promotion to the rank of Captain. His promotion puts him in command of 12-Company, C-Shift.
 
Promotion to the rank of Battalion Chief:
  • Darrell Clark
    • Captain Clark is a 20 year veteran of FSFD. His outstanding leadership abilities have contributed to his successful promotion to the rank of Battalion Chief. His promotion puts him in command of Second Battalion, B-Shift.
COMMENDATIONS
 
MERITORIOUS SERVICE MEDAL
The Meritorious Service Medal will be presented to Battalion Chief Darrell Clark for the work as Union President for the past five years.
 
COMMENDATION MEDIAL
The Commendation Medial will be presented to Captain Gabriel Flanagan for his volunteered services to the FSFD.
 
ACHIEVEMENT MEDAL
The Achievement Medal will be presented to Firefighter Robin Gaines for service as FireTAC Physical Fitness Trainer.
 
ORDER OF SAINT FLORIAN
Saint Florian is the Patron Saint of Firefighters. The Order of Saint Florian will be presented to Mr. Michael Crawford and Mr. J. Michael Dugan of the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith (UAFS) College of Applied Science and Technology for their support and mission of the FSFD.
