Union Christian Academy Displaced by Flash Flooding Over the Weekend
Classes to Resume Later in the Week at New Location, Significant Expenses to be Incurred
Fort Smith, AR - Union Christian Academy will be closed Monday and Tuesday this week and will temporarily relocate classes due to significant flash flooding that impacted the entire school campus over the weekend.
Union Christian Academy Head of School, Ricky Massengale, offered these words of encouragement to families and staff on Saturday evening, “A moment has come upon us in which we have the opportunity to glorify God by our response. We rest not in our circumstances but in Christ. Our hope is not in a building, in a smooth school year, or in zero-deficit--our hope is in our God who is in the Heavens. So, here we stand, knowing that our God is faithful and that He will lead and guide and provide for us, as He always has.”
The administration has made arrangements for classes to resume at two new locations on Wednesday, August 28. The PreK-4th grades will meet at Central Christian Church, and the 5th – 12th grades will meet at Grand Avenue Baptist Church until at least October 1.
The school will not be operational for at least a month due to flooding and contamination from flood waters across the campus. The flood water caused damage in 50% of the high school, 88% of the middle school, 86% of the elementary, 50% of the preschool and the entirety of the cafeteria, Eagles Nest and “The U.”
The flood waters carry with them contaminants, so the floors cannot simply be dried. To ensure a safe environment for students, faculty and staff, ServPro has been contracted. They will remove polluted carpet, sheet rock, and insulation, as well as disinfect the necessary areas. There is a one month projection for the removal, drying, cleaning, and repair work; however, this will be reevaluated as the project continues. Despite the damages and challenges, the school does plan to remain on schedule.
“We have also been working intently today to ensure our school year will continue with excellence and that we can continue to provide a quality, Christian education that honors the Lord.” explained Massengale.
During this time of recovery, the school will incur loss of income in various departments such as the cafeteria and athletics. Additional expenses include insurance deductibles, temporary relocation costs, replacement of classroom and administrative materials and incidentals, among others. The current estimate is that these unbudgeted expenses will exceed $44,000.
