Native Peoples Celebration
The University of Arkansas ? Fort Smith will kick off this year?s Read This! program with a Native Peoples Celebration from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 20 in the Old Gymnasium on UAFS campus. The daylong event will include various performances by local Indian tribes, in addition to a free lunch and presentations by Native American craftspeople. The event is free and open to the public. Artisan and craftspeople demonstrations will take place throughout the event and feature basket weaving, pottery-making, beading, flint-knapping, sign language, Native American flutes, Choctaw stickball and Quapaw football. At 11:30 a.m., Catherine Foreman Gray, history and preservation officer at Cherokee Nation, will present on the history on the Cherokee nation, followed by lunch from noon to 1:30 p.m. From 2-3:30 p.m., Quapaw Native Americans will perform music and dance, and the event will close with Cherokee singing and storytelling from 4-5:30 p.m. Groups not recognized as tribes by the Bureau of Indian Affairs will not be involved in the event.
