Walk for Alzheimers/Run for a Resident
Project Compassion, along with our Partners in Education, Pike Elementary School, students from W.A.T.C. at The University of Fort Smith and ARVEST Bank, are hosting a 1K Walk, a 5K and 10K Run for a Resident on April 12, 2014 at Carol Ann Cross park in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The event will begin at 8:00am on the corner of Euper Lane and the cost is $35.00 if paid before April 6, 2014 and $45 if paid April 7-9, 2014.
There will be no run registration the day of the event. The Pike Walk will begin at 10:00 am with a .6 mile walk at Carol Ann Cross. Donations will cheerfully be accepted to support the students. Morning festivities will continue at 11:00 am when The W.A.T.C. students from UAFS will host a balloon release in honor of our loved ones that suffer from those we have lost. ARVEST Bank will then grill hotdogs while participants and residents visit booths set up by local organizations and facilities that specialize in the treatment and prevention of Alzheimer’s.
The Pike Elementary School students have “adopted” residents at Methodist Health and Rehab and plan to help residents suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s. The students are collecting money and plan to walk to raise $2000 which will fund a Sensory Room at Methodist Health and Rehab. Sensory rooms are bright and colorful with rich textures and have been shown to improve the quality of life for residents! This event will showcase the many ways young people can get involved with elders to make their lives better. There are so many volunteer programs to help residents in nursing homes!
Project Compassion is a non-profit organization and United Way Community Partner that specializes in working with volunteers to visit residents, especially those with no family or friends in nursing homes, long term care facilities and retirement homes. Volunteers also help with Bingo, play music and sing, and bring pets in to visit.
Studies show that more than 60% of area nursing home residents in Arkansas have no family or friends able to come and visit or help them, so many rely on the kindness of others for such things as warm clothing to wear outside the facility in the winter and personal care items. Proceeds from this event will help fund our Christmas Hearts of Gold campaign which supplies the residents with a meaningful gift at Christmas – usually warm clothing and socks for the cold winter months and a book or Bible with a Christmas card and personal care items, such as perfume or lotion they request.
Please join us on April 12th 2014 for a fun morning of activities to support Project Compassion and Pike Elementary School students! Get to know more about WATC and local organizations that help elders and those that care for them! Walk or run in honor of those that cannot and celebrate Project Compassion’s 42nd year as your local volunteer organization with a heart of gold.
