February Declared Youth Aging Out of Foster Care Month in Arkansas
[Fort Smith, AR] – February 3, 2025 – The state of Arkansas has officially declared February as Youth Aging Out of Foster Care Awareness Month, recognizing the unique challenges faced by young adults who transition out of the foster care system. This proclamation highlights the need for community support and resources to help these youth build stable, independent futures.
Jensen Long, Director of Development for the Fort Smith Children’s Shelter and its GetREAL program, traveled to the Arkansas State Capitol on Friday to receive the official proclamation. This recognition underscores the importance of programs dedicated to assisting young adults as they navigate life beyond foster care.
“Every year, youth in Arkansas age out of the foster care system without the safety net of family or a stable support system,” said Jensen. “This proclamation is a crucial step in raising awareness and rallying our communities to provide the mentorship, housing, education, and life skills these young people need to succeed.”
The Fort Smith Children’s Shelter’s GetREAL program serves young adults ages 18-21 who are aging out of foster care or are experiencing homelessness. GetREAL provides safe housing, life skills training, financial literacy education, employment assistance, emotional support, and wrap-around guidance helping participants transition to self-sufficiency.
Throughout February, organizations across the state will be working to amplify awareness and encourage the community to get involved. Individuals and businesses can support youth aging out of foster care by donating, volunteering, or advocating for supports that provide greater opportunities for success.
